WORLD CHAMPIONS RETURN TO CAMBRIDGE
World Masters Weightlifting , USA , 2003
Andy Seaber, Marcus Humphries and David Morgan will arrive back in Cambridge this morning, following a triumphant visit to Georgia, USA .
This year’s Masters Weightlifting competition, culminated in a number of new world records, a second place for the Great Britain team and an abundance of gold and silver medals.
Andy retained his World Champion status in the 69Kg class and earned his third title, lifting 101Kg in the snatch lift to beat his own world record. He went on to clean and jerk 115 Kg.
Marcus, who was competing in his first World Championship, finished an impressive sixth after dealing with a back injury and having to drop 5kg the day before to make the weight.
Both Andy and Marcus who qualified in Bordeaux earlier this year, were supported and coached by Dave Morgan, weightlifting legend. ‘As usual, we relied heavily on Dave for his coaching and motivational preparation’, explained Marcus. ‘I had become disillusioned by my injury and was struggling to make the weight. Dave arrived, and immediately filled me with the motivation and confidence that I needed. I’m delighted with my achievement and will be aiming for a medal at next year’s competition.’
Dave was also adopted by two Australian lifters – one of whom, Chris Duthie won his first gold medal. ‘Dave was an absolute inspiration’, he explained. ‘I was very pumped up, and Dave helped me keep my head and achieve a personal best. He made all the right technical and tactical decisions on my behalf, allowing me to focus on my lifting.’
Dave will be competing in the 2004 European Championships in Poland where he too will attempt to beat the current world records.
